Letter from the Executive Director
Hi, I’m Jim, Summit Senior Living’s Executive Director. The story of how I got started here is an interesting one and I’d like to share it with you:
I have over 30 years of experience in long term care. I started as an Administrator in Training in California and became an Administrator of a mental health facility for long term care psychiatric patients. Three years later I became a nursing home administrator of a rehab unit and stayed in this profession until 2007, when I retired. I had a long, rewarding career, and, by most people’s accounts, I should have been very content in retirement… but I wasn’t. I missed working in senior living terribly. So, I made the decision to come out of retirement, helped open Summit Senior Living in the summer of 2016, and couldn’t be happier. I’m lucky enough to love what I do, and it’s largely because I get the chance to help people every day.
My favorite part of my job, by far, is interacting with the residents, whether it’s during one of our enrichment activities, over a meal, or just visiting with a resident over glass of juice. Maybe it’s because I’m not far behind our residents in age, so I can relate to them and what they’re experiencing. When residents start talking with me about how they feel, or how they’re affected by aging, I sympathize completely. Every once in a while, as I’m visiting with a resident, I'll tell them "we have more in common than you think... I'm also on Medicare." Their initial reaction is usually shock, but then, little by little, I see barriers start to breakdown: their muscles start to relax, their demeanor starts to change, a smile creeps across their face, and poof! Just like that, they’re more comfortable talking to me.
If you’re looking for a senior living community full of people who go above and beyond to relate to seniors and the physical and emotional changes brought on by aging, I’d love to meet you. Email me at firstname.lastname@example.org or call me at 801-528-1993 to schedule a visit.
